It took a lot of thinking to come up with the best way to introduce the story’s Evil Mastermind. Since her secret hideout is in an old abandoned plantation, I was going to have her dressed like Scarlett O’Hara, but then idea struck me of giving her a splashy production number based on the big show-stopper from the musical “Mame”. Because, well, everybody likes a big production number. But I couldn’t think of a way to make it work.
Then I hit on the idea of basing the scene on “Harrigan”, an old George M. Cohan melody from 19-ought-8. Because putting filk lyrics to songs no one has heard of is how I roll.
I first heard “Harrigan” as a kid in an episode of “Gilligan’s Island”. Here is the song performed by the immortal James Cagney in the musical bio-pic, “Yankee Doodle Dandy”
this is off topic a man just posted, very seriously mind you, that he didn’t know that the US traded goods with Britain in the 19th century and I wanted to pound my head against something.
