For logical reasons, the two guys in the suits should have left their protective hoods on, but for dramatic purposes, I decided to show their faces.

Is it geologically plausible for there to be radioactive deposits on a barrier island?  I’m not sure, but it worked for James Bond in Doctor No.  My idea for the radiation-proof suits probably would not work in real life, but it sounded like just the impressive-sounding almost scientific explanation one might find in a pulp adventure.  And Doc Savage was having apparent ghosts turn out to be super-science gadgets long before Scooby-Doo.
